Respiratory Care

Associate of Occupational Studies

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, 10 of the 20 occupations projected to grow the fastest are related to health care. Also, in many cases, it may be easier for job seekers with health-specific training to obtain jobs and advance in their careers.* At Kaplan College, we can provide you with the knowledge, training, and work habits required for an entry-level position in respiratory care.

Program Objective

This program is devised to help you prepare for the Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) and Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) examinations. In order to work as a respiratory therapist in Arizona, you must be licensed by the Arizona Board of Respiratory Care Examiners. This program can assist you in preparing to take the examination required for licensure.† Upon graduation, you may seek employment to perform the following under the supervision of a physician:

  • Administer respiratory therapy care and life support to patients
  • Assess patients to determine the most appropriate methods of therapies
  • Set up and monitor equipment
  • Monitor patients' responses to various treatments
  • Perform pulmonary function testing and assist patients with breathing maneuvers
  • Monitor and troubleshoot life support systems in critical care areas and emergency departments

Career Opportunities

Licensed respiratory therapists may find work in education, management, research, pulmonary rehabilitation, home care, skilled nursing, and specialty areas. Contacting Kaplan College is an important first step to your career as a licensed respiratory therapist.
